“It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack” is an expression used when it’s very difficult to find something small in the middle of something very big. In this case, “accent modification” is the needle and “the internet” is the haystack.
As much as I don’t like the term “accent reduction” because it makes me think of taking away something and not learning new things like my preferred term, “accent modification,”does, that’s the most common term people search for online so I’m stuck with using it and perpetuating it to help me be found in searches.
Something rather unique to the speciality of accent coaching is how it mostly flies under the radar. Why? Most people don’t know what to search for and search results are overwhelming.
Search Results Are Overwhelming
Searching for specific training in improving English speaking skills is a huge task. Searching with these words will lead to an enormous amount of results that don’t quite fit what people are looking for:
English as a second language, ESL speech, English speaking skills, English pronunciation, improving English speech, communication skills, presentation skills, spoken English
It requires sorting through all of the basic language learning programs, schools, courses, and meetings because making changes to an accent is the very fine tuning of speech that is way beyond learning the beginning level.
Accent coaching isn’t about learning a language, it’s about improving on what you already know and use daily.
It requires sorting through all the available books, videos, and online materials. Information is great, but if that’s all it took, having someone give you real feedback wouldn’t be necessary and it definitely is.
Accent coaching isn’t just about knowing what to do, it’s about knowing if you’re matching the target you’ve set for yourself. Objective feedback and guidance will get you there faster than on your own.
It requires sorting out speaking programs for native English speakers who want to improve their public speaking skills and reduce their fear of speaking.
Accent coaching isn’t only about speaking in front of people, it’s also about the everyday interactions you have socially and professionally that make your life better.
What would you search for?
I’m curious, if you were to search for accent modification, what would you search for? If you have, did it provide the results you were looking for?
